What is compounding?
-Compounding is the preparation (usually "from scratch") of medication by a pharmacist according to the doctor's specifications to meet a patient's individualized needs.
When does a pharmacist compound my medication?
-Only when there is not an appropriate product on the prescription drug market. We require a prescription from your doctor for all compounded prescriptions, including over-the-counter and veterinary drugs. Compounding pharmacies should NOT "copy" manufactured products to save money. In that case it is better to buy the manufactured product.
What type or regulations and requirements do compounding pharmacies and pharmacists have to meet?
- All pharmacists, whether working in a traditional retail pharmacy or in a compounding pharmacy, must attend a college of pharmacy, and become licensed and registered in their state. Some pharmacy colleges emphasize more compounding training than others. Most compounding pharmacists devote a great deal of there own time and money to professional development and continuing education in compounding. Some pharmacists can obtain fellowship status with the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists. The state boards of pharmacy regulate, test and license compounding pharmacies, just as they do with traditional retail pharmacies.
Why isn’t my compounded prescription covered by insurance?
-Most insurances cover compounded medications. However, it is difficult to bill a compounded prescription electronically. Therefore, we will give you and insurance claim form to send in for reimbursement. See our insurance information page for more information.
